Pony up! The Ponies of our Lives

Nothing beats a Toronto summer! Long days, warm weather, and great public parks coax Canadian families out of their houses and offices, picnic baskets in hand, and ready to make the most of a warm afternoon. During this season, Pop! Events notices a huge increase in picnic packages for families, and it’s not just baskets filled with delicious summertime fare that keep the customers coming back. One of our most popular packages is all about the ponies. Yes, that’s right, our pony riding packages are popular all over the area, and are guaranteed to thrill the young and old. But ponies aren’t just for riding. These intelligent beasts are much more prominent in society than you might think. Let’s take a closer look at the ponies of our lives.

Just a Small Horse? Nay.

Some think that our adorable four-hoofed friends are nothing but miniature horses, but ponies have attributes all their own! So what exactly is a pony, and why is pony riding so popular today?

Ponies are proportionally different from their galloping counterparts. For example, ponies are stronger than horses (in relation to their body size), which is why they look bulkier. They also have bigger bones and a wider frame. But ponies have to be small, right? Yes, of course. A pony can be no taller than 14.2 hands, starting at the shoulder. Physical characteristics are not the only things that set ponies apart; they are also known to be highly intelligent, which is why they make great riding companions (and why they can be so stubborn!).

Ponies at your Service

Ponies may be cute and cuddly, but they also provide great service to the human race. Their unique physical characteristics and their smarts have provided them with many an interesting trade over the years. Here are some of the interesting jobs you might find on the work history section of a pony’s CV:

• Pulling heavy ploughs on farms
• Lugging loads of coal from British mines
• Method of transport for long distance travel
• Entertainment at circuses around the world
• “Training wheels” for children learning to ride horseback

We may not use ponies for all these things today, but we can sure appreciate all they’ve done, and continue to enjoy their services at events and picnics around the country.

Surely, there must be more examples of all the ways ponies have improved our lives throughout history. Ponies, as we know, are timeless. Unfortunately, we don’t have time to go through them all, but next time you find yourself at a Pop! Events pony riding picnic in the Toronto area, remember that ponies are much more than the sweet and stubby creatures that meet the eye. If you’re looking for a pony at your next picnic or party, let us know!
