Turn Up the Romance with These Alternative Valentine's Day Ideas

Published on

The whole dinner and a movie bit is overrated.  Everyone does the same thing every year for Valentine’s Day, and it gets more kitsch as it goes on.  I don’t listen to the same music or read the same books as everyone else, so why would I want the same twelve roses and box of chocolates as the girl eating the same meal at the identical table next to mine?  Call me a Millennial, but my idea of romance is doing something that my Boo and I can call our own.  Here are a few ideas I’ve got in mind for this year.  What do you think?

Go to a Show

I’m a sucker for live music, so this one is always at the top of my list!  Finding a great band playing nearby is the perfect way to combine romance and the energizing power of music.  Music creates very strong connections between couples.  Don’t believe me?  Why do you think every couple has “their” song?  Check on StubHub for Valentine’s gigs in your area.

Take Out by Candlelight

This is a perfect option for couples trying to save some cash, but who still want to have a romantic evening.  I’m thinking of spending a little on some tongue-in-cheek décor and splurging on my favorite delivery.  If you don’t like the same food as your significant other, just order from one of the UK’s popular food delivery apps and with the click of a button you can have food from multiple restaurants delivered right to your door.

Random B&B

Might not do this one on Valentine’s Day, considering the price hike that usually comes on the day of, but maybe the weekend before or after if we have time, I’d like to choose a totally random location (within an hour or two by car/bus/train) and rent a room for a night.  Even if the place seems boring, it would be fun to explore, invent ghost stories about the houses and mysteries surrounding the people, and just get away for a while.

 Anti-Valentine’s Day

I’ve always wanted to do this.  The idea behind Anti-Valentine’s Day is to avoid consumption completely.  It’s a little bit reactionary, but I think it’s a great idea to say “no” to the price-hiking, gift-grabbing stimulus we’re constantly being subjected to and enjoy the thing that Valentine’s Day is supposed to be about: each other.

DIY Bouquets

This is more of a gift idea than an actual Valentine’s Day idea, but here goes.  DIY bouquets are a fun way to personalize a bouquet, and the best thing is that they’re just as good a gift for boys as they are for girls.  Does your guy like gaming?  Make him a bouquet of Xbox mags and include a gift card or some cool gadgets in there.  You can make bouquets of sweets, veggies, music merch, or even clothes and accessories.  The only limit is your imagination!

Get creative and don’t forget to post some of your ideas!
